An imaginary friend book6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() At least, their fate is not described as being so horrible. Even those that don’t escape don’t end up suffering all that horrible of fate. All of the horror happens on the imaginary side of the world where no one dies and everyone always escapes. But after about the first couple hundred pages, it all grates and all repeats. ![]() The choices seem very much inline with how an 8 or 9 year old would think or speak. The breaks and short sentences create a tone and a mood that leave the reader unsure and unstable. Over 900 pages of this book were written like that: short, declarative sentences fragments strange, unnecessary capitalization breaks in the sentence and paragraph. Christopher and his single-mother are starting over in a town. ![]()

![]() What is also pleasing is that they are not straightforward morality tales, in which bad children get punished (although there are one or two characters who thoroughly deserve what they get). Noises, footsteps and fog encroach soon, it becomes apparent that what he is telling Edgar may be dangerously close to reality. Uncle Montague narrates as he and his nephew sit in the drawing-room of his house. These are all told with great, economic style, all concerning familiar tropes, and yet with a dash of originality that makes them thoroughly absorbing. ![]() Uncle Montague’s Tales of Terror by Chris Priestley throbs with sinister brilliance it pleases me immeasurably to report that the art of the chilling, well-crafted ghost story is still alive and kicking. ![]() ![]() Young Edgar has a dark and dangerous hunger for thrills that draws him to his mysterious Great-Uncle Montague’s spooky house, which looms at the edge of a forest. ![]()

The invincible by stanisław lem6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The question of what constitutes life is at the center of the plot. They're about the same size as an insect, so they're referred to as micromachines, and they have a self-organizing ability that allows them to swarm as a hive-mind, which is a terrifying, nearly prophetic prediction of the ideas of an internet. These lifeforms are self-replicating machines of an insect nature. During the investigation of a planet called Regis III, the crew discovers a form of life that is sub-organic (or maybe super-organic, depending on whether you're rooting for the humans or the robots). The Invincible begins with a warship called the Invincible in search of Condor, another sister ship. As Beautiful as It Seems by Diana Hawk6/25/2023 ![]() I don’t even really want to share this–it’s terrifying. I’m not saying this for pity or attention. It’s been seven months since that day, and I can still feel the despair that wracked through my body whenever I think back. What was I supposed to say? I feel like I’m going to kill myself? I’m ideating on how to make it look like an accident so I don’t hurt anyone else? I dialed 911 and let my finger hover over the call button, terrified that this was my end. I couldn’t put what I was going through on anyone else. I opened a few contacts, almost pressed call, and then put my phone down. I couldn’t call my mom–this would break her heart. ![]() ![]() I resorted to laying rigid with fear, staring at the ceiling for hours on end, thinking this was it. ![]()

The rover conrad6/25/2023 ![]() I read three of those books Woolf names in the heady flush of my teenage enthusiasm for Conrad – but only because I had first read Heart of Darkness, Nostromo, The Secret Agent, Under Western Eyes and Victory. It is the earlier books – Youth, Lord Jim, Typhoon, The Nigger of the ‘Narcissus’ – that we shall read in their entirety. ![]() We shall make expeditions into the later books and bring back wonderful trophies, large tracts of them will remain by most of us untrodden. ![]() I also enjoy tutting over the confident and wonderfully inaccurate predictions in the conclusion: The thing that I notice most, sitting here in 21st-century piety, is the apparently snooty condescension of the opening Woolf calling Conrad “our guest”, as if he spent all those years in British literary society on sufferance. But read Conrad, not in birthday books but in the bulk, and he must be lost indeed to the meaning of words who does not hear in that rather stiff and sombre music, with its reserve, its pride, its vast and implacable integrity, how it is better to be good than bad, how loyalty is good and honesty and courage, though ostensibly Conrad is concerned merely to show us the beauty of a night at sea.īut it isn’t those observations that stand out today. ![]()

The first law best served cold6/24/2023 ![]() Monza Murcatto and her brother Benna are the leaders of the Thousand Swords, the huge mercenary band in the employ of Duke Orso of Talins: Monza’s successful leadership contributed to Orso’s sweeping conquest of a huge part of Styria, and as the book starts the siblings are headed toward the ducal palace to report on their latest victory. ![]() While I’m not in the habit of re-reading books – mostly because book blogging and a huge TBR compel me to look forward rather than back – I decided to make an exception for this first stand-alone novel in Joe Abercrombie’s First Law series: back in 2011 Best Served Cold was my introduction to this author and to the concept of grimdark fantasy (and although I enjoyed it, it took me an unfortunate long time before I read the three books that precede this one) and what this re-read taught me is that, apart from the core concept of the novel, I had practically forgotten the majority of narrative details, so that my drive to re-acquaint myself with the story ended up feeling like a first encounter. ![]() |
