The posthumous memoirs of bras cubás6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The novel is the life story of the titular Brás Cubas, written by himself from beyond the grave, where he lies festering. It is short and immensely readable thanks to its equally short chapters it is funny it has an interesting narrative approach and it tells a story whose messages remain valid a hundred years later – and will remain valid, I don’t doubt, for many hundreds of years yet. There are many reasons for having a go with this book. Also translated as Epitaph of a Small Winner, I read Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas in the recent translation by Margaret Jull Costa and Robin Patterson, though there is also a new Penguin translation too. ![]() When I asked my director of studies for recommendations for South American literature – beyond the usual suspects – she named various people, but when she mentioned Machado and this novel specifically, she spoke with such passion that I really had no excuse not to go out and get a copy. A Brazilian and grandson of slaves, Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis is probably the most important Portuguese-language writer of the past two-hundred years. ![]()

Corto maltese mu6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() Pratt was inspired by Conrad, Stevenson, and London, but even more directly by Henry de Vere Stacpool's Blue Lagoon, from which the author got the idea of a small island in the Pacific which he named "Escondida."ġst printing. Henrietta & Eleanor by Libby Spurrier6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() An Audible Original, the story was read like an old radio drama, complete with sound effects, voice actor cast, and a realistic feel to the storytelling. What I thought was great was the audio aspects of the story. ![]() I thought the book would take more of an original take to the story, rather than changing the time period and gender of the main character. It kept the disturbing and dark elements, which I liked, but didn’t go darker or more disturbed than I expected. An exploration of human duality and forces of good and evil, this modern retelling is compelling and eerie and retains the disturbing nature of the original text.Ī decent retelling of the original Jekyll and Hyde. However, gradually her evil side gains strength until Dr Jekyll is overwhelmed by Eleanor Hyde, to disastrous consequences. For many years she manages to live under the radar, keeping her dark secret unknown to those around her. Title: Henrietta & Eleanor | Author: Libby Spurrier| Rating: 3/5ĭr Jekyll, a charming doctor, explores the possibility of dividing the dark and light side of her personality, but in doing this she creates a monster, Eleanor Hyde. A dark, foreboding retelling of Jekyll and Hyde, this time following a woman scientist who’s figured out how to separate the good and bad sides of her nature into two separate people. ![]()

Black Pain by Terrie Williams6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() If I'm honest with myself, and with you, the fact is that I'm more like these folks than I care to admit. He can't talk about it, nor can his family, even though he's a respected physician and his brother is a well-regarded man of the cloth! Sometimes I would come home from these trips totally drained in my heart and soul, having heard stories like the one I heard from a man whose two sisters are home suffering from major depression. ![]() After my talks, person after person would come to me to confide that they, too, were "going through it." ![]() ![]() Their fear was echoed in conversation upon conversation I had while traveling across the country giving talks about how we are doing - about waking up in pain each day - to audiences that ranged from CEOs to regular churchgoers. The folks who wrote to me were scared - some of them terrified - to breathe a word to anyone they were paralyzed by the fear that no one would understand or accept them. Not friends, not family members, but me - someone they didn't know! I also wasn't prepared for the intensity of my frustration as I came to understand how many Black women and men are suffering silently. Complete strangers wrote to me because I was the safest person they could share with. I received over 10,000 letters, over half of them from people "coming out" for the first time about their pain and depression. I was not prepared for the reaction it generated. In June 2005 I wrote an article about my depression for Essence magazine. I'm Coming Out, I Want the World to Know It's not just what we say, but what we don't say. ![]()

Midnight for charlie bone book6/27/2023 ![]() The Yewbeam aunts (Grandma Bone’s three sisters) are also a little on the evil side and help Grandma when necessary to keep them in check.Ĭharlie gets a surprise visit from an “exterminator” named Onimous and the three flame cats (one yellow, one orange, one red). ![]() Gma Bone has kept them on a short leash so she can see if Charlie is endowed with a special gift (the photograph hearing). See, since Charlie’s dad died when he was two, Charlie lives with his mom, his mom’s mom (Maisie), his uncle Paton, and his dad’s mom (Grizelda Bone). Charlie doesn’t have a choice– the family is at the mercy of Grandma Bone et al. While his mom and grandma Maisie are frightened at this discovery, the Bone/Yewbeam side of the family is ecstatic and enroll him into Bloor’s Academy. Synopsis: Charlie discovers that he can hear people in photographs when he receives a photo of a father and daughter, and you can hear the photographer saying this will be the last time the father will see his little girl. ![]() Cuz that isn’t fair to ruin a whole series, ya know? Plus, this book is HARD to sum up and sound coherent. I’m going to do a summary of the first book (yeah, will probably include spoilers) but I don’t think I’ll continue to sum up the series. ![]() ![]() It gets a little confusing with the many characters, the various powers, etc. Before I get started, Charlie Bone is the protag in a series of books called The Children of the Red King. ![]()

The rise of totalitarianism book6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() Revolution was not merely a political overturn, but one that held a promise for the future-otherwise it was Reaction. ![]() ![]() Progress was the movement of time, not merely from the known to the unknown, but from the worse to the better it contained within itself the fact of change and the positive evaluation inevitably accruing to it. Traditionally, all of these terms have been summary evocations of a world-view. But conservatism can afford, in principle, to fall back on a stubborn and mindless balking, whereas liberalism is committed to the general idea and the reasoned program, and its crisis is therefore the more poignant.Īmong the key words of modern liberalism that now ring somewhat hollow are Progress, Revolution, and Liberty. It is true that this is also the problem of conservatism, and to a more extreme degree our technological society is moving with a resolution that scornfully converts all conservative phraseology into romantic cant. The problem of liberalism today is essentially the problem of a surviving rhetoric and a crumbling philosophy. ![]()

![]() Each tale normally tells of a young child, who more often than not is unpleasent to those around them, and the misfortunes that become them. Whether it be a strange Uncle, a woman in white or a pirate, the figure offers to tell stories as a means of passing the time. In each book a young boy (or a pair of siblings in Tales from the Black Ship) finds himself trapped or isolated with a somewhat mysterious figure. The Tales of Terror Trilogy whilst being three seperate books, does all seem to take place in the same universe. ![]() I read two of the three and when I went to read them again although I couldn’t recall conpletely what happens, I do remeber then being very creepy and very readworthy. I remember first reading Chris Priestley’s Tales of Terror trilogy years ago back in high school. The world needs wonders, even awful ones. ![]() |
